I went through 4 chains on a fruitless mulberry. That was the end of square for me lol. Made me want a grinder really bad...
That sucks. I've hit metal multiple times millin' but I just can't give up on the smoothness and speed of square.

What's worse for me is filing away half the toof to get rid of the damage. That I hate! Usually end up phoning a friend with a grinder.

Lol need a friend with a grinder out here. I hit quite a bit of metal milling some oak awhile ago. It really sucks filing it on the mill.

Unfortunate when you find a pebble in the bark like that, but any full chisel chain will loose the corner just like that.

It takes a lot of filing by hand to correct damage like that. I generally bring extra saws with me (or would bring extra chains).

I would generally have a tooth like that ground down in round and then re convert it to square. If it is not too bad, I can do it with my little 12V grinder.

Just buy a diamond stone for it, the stones that come with them are crap.

Here is my first attempt at square file. Any criticism is welcome. Sorry about the terrible pictures!View attachment 197745 View attachment 197746 View attachment 197747
P.S. I am only using vanguard chain to train myself and I figured I would probably ruin my first chain, but I think it actually turned out decent.
Looks good to me. I like the slight forward lean on your side plate. Your inner corner may be a touch high for a long lasting edge, but it should cut great. Not sure if there is a slight side beak as well, as your pics are a little fuzzy. If you do have a slight beak it will cut great, but not last as long. I’m by no means an expert, and I’m sure there are more knowledgeable guys here that will chime in, though.
When I started square filing I posted up pics here and got a lot of good guidance.
You’re already ahead of most who start square filing, so you’ll do just fine.

By the way, this was Rex at the Humane Society. I wanted to adopt him badly, but he did not get along well with other dogs, and we had one, so it was a no go.

He was a really good dog, a mix of Pit and Mastiff. This is from Aug 2014, I walked him for years, but he has since passed.

He was 85 lbs of pure muscle!
