Mike. Your 462 should wipe the 044s arse. And take its lunch money twice on Sunday.
If not there is something wrong with it.
You gotta be real here...
I was back and forth between my 440 and 462 with “identical” bar/chain setups in the same wood, same fuel, etc. No arses were wiped. (Or whipped, as I believe the analogy should read)

It’s been a long time since I had my early 12mm slant fin 044, but that saw was very strong from memory. If anything I think the 462 might make a little more peak power... but the 044 has a little more grunt. I would take the 462 every time though, the overall saw is better imho.

The 462 is light, has spring AV and instant throttle response, making a very pleasant saw to use, but as far as performance I think it and my 10 mm 044 would be quite close. I will bring them both to the CT GTG in a week and a half.

My 044 is modded (but not ported) (timing advance, base gasket delete, etc) and the 462 just has a muffler mod. I would guess the 044 runs a bit faster and the 462 has a bit more grunt, so in the wood they should be very close.

I have a late Mahle 10mm red lever(Serial No. 128x). It's the only saw I have owned where I thought needed nothing - then of course I went and added a dual port muffler and advanced the timing ;) I would love to have a 462, but they are still over a grand here. And, admittedly, I am rather fond of my 044.

I don’t have stock saws to do the comparison
Doesn’t matter really, if there were 20 comparisons done. Somebody somewhere will always think that what they have is better. Wether it be a 044, or 460, or 461, or some variant. Any one of these saws could beat a 462 on any given day. Too many different variants of these saws to make judgement by testing one or even 10 of them.

Hey, I love my 462 … light, smooth, powerful, instant throttle response … all in all hard to beat … but that does not mean that I'm going to lie and say it will out run everything else!

It is about time that Stihl came out with a legitimate replacement for the 044/440!
