The piston rings are 038 Magnum .The clutch side seal is next to impossible to find .Not all of them had slotted head screws only the early ones .Torx head type are a good replacement I've seen the av mounts on flea bay .The oil pump is 028,038,042 and 048 .( I have all 4 ) As far as I know most parts excluding the piston and cylinder from an 042 will interchange . What I don't know is if an 038 Mag piston being 52 MM will interchange . If it would work the cylinders are pretty tough .
The origin of this model is a mystery and why it was discontinued likewise .Some say it was because of case leaks because of the slotted screws . Of the two 048's and one running 042 plus one parts saw 042 only one had slotted screws of the ones I own .--and it didn't leak .

Ok, I may have some extra OEM 038 Mag rings in the garage.

Understood on the screws; mine has hex head; tightened them up and I'll keep 'em.

I have an 028 and 038 Mag as well; I robbed the oil pump from my 038 Mag to use since the one in the 048 was really crusty.

Need to source a few NOS AV mounts from eBay.

Thanks for the input.

Scott

Some of them had a Fairbanks-Morse type starter recoil assembly and some of them used the standard pawl type used on most saws .Stihl had enough brains to use a nylon insert instead of aluminum like the older saw models,it didn't slip .

Mine has the pawl type. Thanks

I think I saw meteor piston kits for the 048 also, I have 4 total couple are scored but other ones will run pretty sure, actually one does run till you put a bar and chain on it and it make the seal leak because bearing is loose on pro side.

I haven't seen Meteor kits; have searched quite a bit on eBay.

This model was the first Stihl I ever owned .It came from a Stihl dealer in Oregon .The lady wrote me and said she didn't figure the shipping correctly so I sent a few more dollars .Then she figured it wrong again and sent me the change .They were honest and said it had a spun main .No problem ,I've got more tricks up my sleeve than a Mississippi river card shark when it comes to fixes .It's a good runner but it sits most of the time because I've got a lot of good runners that are lighter by a few pounds .You get 40 - 50 saws it's almost impossible to exercise them all .

By BB I mean step it up to a bigger jug. This piston is very heavy for a 52mm. The saw can handle the bigger piston. A 56mm would be perfect imo. Stihl offered nothing more on the 048s. It would need to be stroked a mil to use an 1122 jug.

Edit jug numbers

Ok, I've done bored and stroked musclecar motors (Ford 460 bored and stroked to 514, Pontiac 400 bored and stroked to 467, etc) but that's a bit more involved than I want to get with this saw.

The 048 s already the bigget of the 1117 series.
There was only the 042 with smaller diameter jug.

Or maybe a Jred. Something long. 056 mag2 would fit nice. Might need a base plate. Big case big crank short arm.

What do you guys think of a BB 048? Bolt-ons are fun on heavy old saws, yes?

Before you get so involved it was rumored when this model came out it was the highest horse power to weight ratio of any saw built up to that time .In good running form this model does not lack power .It will easily handle a 32" with full comp chain buried in oak .It might not be a champion over the blocks ,see who's saw can cut cants faster but good over all .

Ran across some good info on another site:

"S/N 112801305 and above has an uprated engine.
Port timing was changed and a Walbro WS 25 carb with a larger bore was installed, in place of a WS 14.
The cylinder will have 2 little plus signs after the ID code (52ZN14) on the bottom edge of the cylinder on the flywheel side.
This took it from 3.6 kW (4.8 hp) to 3.8 kW (5.0) at 9k."

Spent an hour or two tinkering with it today. Got the jug cleaned up and all the transfer removed. LRB piston and rings installed. Jug installed, no gasket.

Oh they run good. Smoother than my 660. More rpm. Works great with a 28 3/8 50. It should pull 404. The 36 3/8 50 full comp was too much for mine. Bone stock saw 029 coil.

They must have a short blowdown time. 16-18 I'll bet.

One of mine with a full wrap handle came out of a repair shop in northern Minnesota .As I recall it had a bad coil, would not advance so therefore at ran at restricted rpm's . A replacement coil fixed that .These and the 042 had self advancing coils so to jump the timing I doubt would help any .Probably just make it hard to start .That one needs a clutch side seal which I have one left .It's a back burner project .
Now the funny part is the guy who had the coil was also on A-S and didn't know what it was .At that time I wasn't banished and told him it was in fact 048 .He put it on flea bay and I bought it for a whole 5 dollars .Nobody evidently wanted it .

A former Stihl mechanic told me Stihl wanted to get that saw into the US forest service and their firefighters. Not sure if it’s true but he had some great posters of Stihl 048s with the caption “ only the strong survive “ with a forest service guy holding an 048 after a forest fire in Idaho.
There’s two options of air filter cover on those which can be a hassle if you break the one you have.

There also might have been two styles of mufflers. Both mine are one piece baffled but I believe there was a two piece pressure can .I can't remember about the 042,too cold out now to check the shed .
