I will agree that most aftermarket plating is crappy. OEM is better, but I say we pole (poll, I guess that's a Freudian slip on my part) the builders here as to the factors that make them choose an OEM cylinder to port over aftermarket.
I would rate the plating this way.
1) Mahle Nikasil
2) Millenium, Gillardoni/Meteor
3) KS, US Chrome, Hyway
4) Stihl
5) Everyone else

For Cylinder fit and finish
1) Millenium, Gilly/Meteor
2) KS, US Chrome, Mahle
3) Stihl
4) Hyway
5) the rest
I'd just throw Hyway in with "the rest" lump since some of "the rest" have some pretty good models, and Hyway has it's fair share of poorly fitting/poorly designed cylinders even though their plating always looks the best, thickest, and most durable. I've seen some white box cylinders I'd take over Hyway anyday even with the super thin chrome plating.

I have always wondered about Stihl cylinders. I noticed they look like chrome, but are more nikasil colored when compared to a chrome cylinder. They seem to somewhat resemble Echo cylinders, but Echo is Chrome only I guess.

So... this just splained why Dolkitas have nice jugs
Franks DDawg

Mikey, you missed boat on "why" Some good points but not the main reasons for using OEM jugs.

Some do a few good AM offerings but like Mr. Detter said find ones with round holes is your first hill to climb. When I find good ones ordering three or four more seems to net me a 50/50 ratio of round holes or less. Then they must be fixed just to use. Why start there most times. Even new OEM is rarely offering A cylinders over the counter. They make three grades A, AB and B

Bore and plate, machined maybe, ported OEM gives you A and AA grade with no edges. Zero worries on 99% of the castings. I need bigger motors but not for racing. DDawg has to keep aluminum scuff off the cylinder walls or it is an instant fail, no mistakes. Same deal with strokers, no mistakes or it's very bad most times when chit fails. Nothing new there.
Are you suggesting the manufacturer’s marking of a cylinder A or B,etc. is a representation of grade and not indicating bore diameter tolerances?

Your entire post made sense Kenny.

Been cuttin back?

Are you agreeing with Kenny?:D

I thought the Cross cylinders for the 660s, which were supposed to be based on a MMWS ported cylinder, had better ports than most AM and a lot of OEM, and I also thought the plating was very good on them. I know that Randy was disappointed that they lacked some consistency, some ran a lot better than others.

I did hear some reports of some of them not being "square" (the bore was crooked), but I never knowingly encountered that problem.

When they were offered with the group buy for $50 extra, IMO that was a tremendous opportunity to upgrade.

Happy New Year everyone!

Happy new year Mike. The cross mmws cylinder on the 064 hybrid runs quite good after I re-ported it and changed a few things. The exhaust roof and floor were way too flat. I had to re shape them and raise the roof quite a bit to achieve what I wanted. The question is how long will the plating last... good cheap cylinders to learn porting on though.

The casting itself sucks, clamped one in a Kurt vice and afterwards the piston wouldn’t even fit in the bore. Like a round peg in a square hole.

Most just plainly avoid that.

Well we know the bore diameter is going to be marked with A AB or B based on the bore dimensions for over the counter sales.
The factory grades the jug based on the casting before they look at the bore so I'm told or was many moons ago. It makes sense to let a poor casting with some flaws to make an A grade go over the counter as an AB grade with a bit of extra honing or not. I have measured cylinders in the past marked AB or B with an A grade bore size. So to some extent you can try to drop a B piston in an AB or A bore and they are too tight. Doesn't happen often but this is why each slug gets fitted to every hole if your doing things tight and right.
I've also bought C grade pistons based solely on the manufactures defects making it so. Those bores could be anywhere in size imo. Not sure anyone even sells those now days.

So to answer your question will always bring pushback and disagreements so I rarely discuss it online. The grade letters are not solely based on bore size. They do give a good indication of what to expect for a near bore sizing imo. Fair enough?

Now that said... asking guys who install pistons and cylinders not boxed in a matched set could give you better feedback on if this still holds true in today's current market.

Sorry if you were hoping for more on the subject. That's all I got today :)

A,AB,B,C .
This really isn't anything new or different. Manufacturing tolerances expressed in a letter.

Same as plain bearing "color codes" for different clearances....

Generally they will all "work" in everyday use, but not "optimally"

Nope. No time right now. Pics are for customers till time permits. Just standard stuff nothing fancy but a few saws of mine that work has begun on.
You are that busy that you can't take a couple photos? Come on Kenny. You gotta be kidding. Took you longer to type a couple of your posts than it would have to post a couple of picks.
Everything is so secretive... Why?

Seems he has plenty o’ time in other threads for pics.
:sherlock:

Mine looks way worse and used.
I'll get a pic today of mine from the tank cap side. Betting it is a 1994 flattop. I'll see if it has a serial number with an original case. I know where this saw was bought new.
