Ok i recently picked up a great little husky 350 from a fellow member. After receiving the saw it ckd out good. So i have taken it with me the past two days and let a buddy use it while he is waiting for muffler bolts for his 262. We have been cutting maple and beech and he has ran the 350 for hours now. It has done excellent. Now here's the delima. His grandfather has a 350 that needs new seals and new piston. I have the saw on my bench and i believe the jug is fine. His is 45mm and mine is 44mm.

My friend asked if i would just sell the grandfather my 350 and take his 350 on trade. I have 125.00 in mine including shipping pho. So maybe allow him 50.00 on his plus 75.00 cash? I dont really want to do this since my saw seems to be a winner and could easily have a meteor flat top piston and mm to upgrade. What would ya'll do?

If it's a good friend I'd trade and slap a 346 piston kit on the one you're getting.
Yes it is a good friend and the thought had crossed my mind. But i dont want to put he expense into this project if i dont have too. If i did a deal i would only install a 353 piston.

Offer to fix his grandfathers saw and make a little cash in the deal
Yep this is what i am leaning towards. I also told him that i would just purchase this saw as is and the lids could buy the grandfather a new 545 for father's day.

The way it was leaking you will probleby have to do a full rebuild on your friends grandads saw.
You have to expect it will be bearing&seals + meteor piston.
You can swap but you defently has to cover what it will cost you to build up the 350 and some extra cash due risk that you has to put a tad more money into it also.

That's right. I am thinking i dont want to foot the bill on a full rebuild when this was suppose to be a fun project.

oem bearing&seal is very pricey, over 25$ for each I think, you can go cheaper if you buy SKF 6202 C3VG104 from an dealer and go for an quality AM seal, dont know who sell quality seal though.

Since another shop has done this terrible work you cant expect to be able to reuse the bearing.

If you do full rebuild it's probleby worth 150$ (had discussion on SH about 350 prices).
If you want to go even or earn a few $ as you deserve taking the risk, you cant really pay more then 50$ for the project.

Landmark, where is your sense of adventure! Yep, that saw is a full rebuild... do it right, don't take very long at all. you'll be happy w/ the result and your buddy will be happy too.

check out my vid on the 350 tips and tricks, and you'll be good!

FYI, this weekend, we tried a stock saw vs muff modded on the dyno, stock its a turd.

I'm working on getting graphs for everyone.

I watched your vids on the 350 and found them very helpful. My sense of adventure is toward the already running 350. I will rebuild this one for him if he wants to foot the bill for parts and labor. besides, I am suppose to have 550 project on the way and that's where the real adventure will begin.

I think I would agree with you. But I have never rebuilt a saw. (Yet) but on the flip side if i where the friend. I would want to make sure I was going to get a running saw after spending the money.

If he chooses to have me rebuild it then it will be a running, pressure/vac tested and quality rebuilt saw that I am confident in or I wouldn't agree to rebuild it.

Corey, you don't have to be a great mechanic.... just follow my vids and you are good enough!

Landmark, even parts 350's are bringing $100+ on ebay right now for complete units. So it may be possible to simply unload it. Otherwise, honestly, I'd charge him pretty high for labor. It really would be best to tear the whole thing down, clean it and back together, which definitely involves some considerable labor time. between all the parts order, the porting, machine time etc takes me a month to build a saw.... maybe 10 hours labor start to finish over that month. maybe more if I'm researching parts and trying to find best prices etc.

best of luck whatever you decide to do :)

You will like the 550, but a good running 350 or 346 hybrid will keep up or surpass it.

As I read this it looks like you mentioned putting a 353 piston in your 44 m/m saw, I believe the flat top 353 piston is 45 m/m.

No. if you read what I replied to, it was suggested getting the 350 from the friend (45mm) and install 346 top end. I replied if I acquired the friend's saw I would only install a 353 piston. That's what's already been installed into the friends saw.

It is what you wrote in the initial post, that didn't make sense - it looked like you was considering putting a flat top piston into the 44mm cylinder, and not the 45mm one - as @old guy said.

I agree with Matt. However, if he is a good friend then labor, IMO, is subject to what its worth to you to make a good friends dad happy. I seem to always come out on the short end, luck of the Irish I guess. But my reward is taking my friends saw, that he had worked on by a competent mechanic and developed an air leak, and bringing said saw back to life. I guess its a pride thing. I dont nearly make as much as I should, but I make more than I could. You will make the right decision!

by the link Dave provided us Meteor make flat piston to both 44 and 45 mm.
I dont know anything about 350, I guess both you and me get some education today :D for all I know 44mm was maybe with flat piston anyway lol
