What to look for in parts saw

I run a two saw setup currently. Echo CS-400 and 590. My dealer has the graveyard of saws in his shop and one happens to be a cs-400. No clue what’s wrong with it but it looks complete.

What are the typical parts you like to rob off of a “parts saw”?

Was going to go back for it this week. Hopefully it is still there.

Id say the more parts the parts saw has the better .
You never really know what your gonna need so better to have and not need then to need and not have !

Complete, assembled parts saws are Your best bet.

Unless it is a fried or crushed parts saw there is a big chance that what failed "naturally" on Yours is gone on the parts saw too - it is how it goes within same model ranges.

I have accumulated a fair stash of parts saws by now, complete & dismantled.
I am not looking forward of needing any of it for my runners, I just bought those "because".
OK, I did buy a whole PS-3400/3410 parts lot just to get a tank cap that I lost.

Check for brake handles, coils, sprockets, antivibe bushings/springs. And of course front handle.

You never know, it might just need some elbow grease and a few parts to get running. We had several saws at work from scored cylinders to fried clutches that were abandoned by the owner and not worth the shop to fix so I bought them $50 and fixed them for cheap. Be aware, you might get addicted and go back and see what else the dealer might have.

I'm rebuilding a Husqvarna 353, with two 345s as donors, since the two models share a lot of parts. So far, I've cannibalized brake detent, bar plate, muffler shield, and a dual port muffler.

That is where I run into issues, I get a parts saw and then I start rebuilding it...

Any of mine comes up with a minor issue that is easy to repair (oil pressure lines, A/V mounts) I buy another running saw ...

I have a PS-460 (corrected, not a PS-4600 Speed, those are functional, I have two "460's") that has never in my ownership had a B&C mounted, lest cut any wood.

It is missing the chain tensioner, nothing else.
And I did get a couple, but I don't seem too interested to install one.

I have a PS-5105H, running condition but not fired up since I purchased her.
Something is very wrong with the piston as the ring gap is smack down the middle of the exhaust port, gotta pull the cylinder and see what frankensteinery the previous owner did to that saw.

Looks minty from the outside, fires up & runs fine, handles get warm - which is why I didn't pull the muffler checking her out at the sellers.
Yeah, my mistake!

My primary PS-7900 is loosing all oil under her clutch, needs new oil pressure line which I have several!

I have a secondary PS-9010 that I never ran in wood in my ownership.
She runs but needs multiple parts, which I all have since I bought the saw.

Damn, I need to go through my saws!

I avoid burn victim saws. Good chance some or all of the metal parts are ruined.

There is a poor EA6100 on FBM right now calling my name to salvage her.

Two miserable pictures attached to the ad, description says "new engine, needs handle and A/V mounts".

Looking at the two pictures on a desktop PC screen it is clear that:
- the saw got crushed by a tree, front handle bent all to hell, rear handle nearly non existing
- the saw caught fire as her rear handle/fuel tank got crushed, burn marks and molten plastics everywhere

I don't yet own a 6100 parts saw, but this one would be very questionable in terms of good internals & cases.

Those ones are worth the gamble if they're free.

Oh, boy would I. I would love to come back to Croatia...had a great time there! Unfortunately my only experience was in Zagreb, I am sure other parts are great too!! And to work on chainsaws to boot....I don't think it could get much better!!

I bought an 066 for $50, the owner ran it and while still hot, wanted to blow the saw dust off of it, so he used a can of ether he had near by....fireball ensued and the plastic and wires melted. The metal was fine, but most of the plastic and wires had to be replaced, saw still runs great!!

If You are a "townie" then Zagreb was Your poison.
If You are not though, You haven't seen Croatia!

Unfortunately, I was there for work and so was limited to Zagreb, usually there is so much more to see and do outside of the big cities!!
