Hello all!

Recently picked up an echo PAS-225VP. This is similar to the srm225 but with a coupler so one could change attachments.

Reading the owner's manual they recommend changing the gear grease after so many hours. They specify to use something white lithium grease based and not to over fill.

What they don't say is how much to fill it or how to get rid of the old grease. Youtube videos are worthless as the folks there are filling it to the brim. I know from changing diff fluid in the car and motorcycle (shaft drive) that there is most definitely a specific level/spec.

What do the experts on here suggest?

Thanks!

Echo sells a tube of grease that screws in where the plug goes. You simply squeeze by hand until it wont take anymore. There is no way to get the old grease out without disassembling the gear head but it is really not necessary as the grease never gets contaminated. You just need to keep it topped up and you are good to go.

^^Thanks for the response. I'm still having difficulty wrapping my mind around filling it completely. The manual states to not over fill. From previous work on differentials the same concept applied. Too much fluid was bad, causing aeration which leads to inadequate lubrication. Granted, this was with a more fluid fluid and not a grease.

Too much grease will make the gearbox get hot, that echo video is a good explanation of what to do.

I wonder why they never tell us to do that in service school, they always say to screw the tube in where the plug goes and squeeze by hand. It is not possible to completely fill the gearbox that way because there will always be an air pocket.

If Echo says to do it with that gun then that is good enough for me.
