This thread is for the misc chains that members are getting from Valley Firewood. I guess if you happen to have a surplus of chains otherwise and want to join there is no harm :) I prefer TRADING for chain ... since that was what I wanted from VF in the first place, i'm not expecting to profit from this.

Please post in this format:

I have

XXXX

I want

XXXX

chains are annoyingly specific

most important, BRAND(oregon, windsor etc), gauge (043,050,058,063), type (chisel, low pro, semi, rip etc), DRIVE LINK # ... this is more important than bar length, and safety or non safety.

I'll start it.... I am not done with sorting, filing, etc, but I'll post what I have....

Six loops of nearly spent chains. 3/8. THESE ARE SHIPPED FOR FREE to a good home. If said recipient decides these have value, he's welcome to make a donation in the form of chains to me, but no pressure.

now for the specific ones.....the bags are numbered to help out... and the ones that say sharp have been on my grinder ... rakers are UNTOUCHED, and will need to be ground for preference
i've spent a lot of time trying to make sure the DL are correct, forgive me if I miss something

1. Stihl 3/8 050 lo pro 56dl sharp non safety
2. Stihl 3/8 050 81dl full chisel non safety sharp
3. Stihl 3/8 050 60dl full chisel non safety sharp

Ok, so how about this for a deal... I'll trade the chains I have listed above ... 13 chains .... and ship to anyone that will ship me SIX new 72lgx072g chains. left coast supply has them at $14.63 each

http://leftcoastsupplies.com/product/super-guard-chisel-chain-38-4/

or, if someone wanted the best deal going, (this is 10, I only want six out of this lot)

http://www.ebay.com/itm/221603828140?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT

I'll include the nearly trashed chains as well if you'd like.

Just to be clear, you got a bunch of chains from the raffle, ran them through your grinder and now want $90 for them?

Just to be clear, took me an entire day to sort through these. Not looking to make money, just to trade for chains I can use. So, are you telling me that I'm not allowed to trade one type of thing for another?

Lets try this again, 13 chains, for about $5 each including ship... are you seriously saying that I'm offering a raw deal?

Let me be clear again, I honestly had no idea what I was getting when I chose this box in the raffle. Figured if it was trash I'd take one for the team. Ok... fine. I can suck that up, but so far I've pulled 2 or 3 chains from 45 lbs of chain that I can actually use. SOMEONE else can use them. So am I to offer free chains now after I cleaned them, sorted them, figured out what type they were, and ground most of them? I ain't lookin to make money, just looking to get some chain that I can use.

I'm unsure what T's beef is here.... can someone enlighten me how I'm screwing others... or in some way insulting Scott (which is who the raffle was for)

Holy read too much into a question, Batman.

How's this?

You have a bunch of freshly ground chains that you want around $90 for, correct?

Better?

I have 13 freshly ground mid life chains that I want 6 new chains for.... if those 6 new chains are worth $14.65 each (+ship) then I'm fine with that.

I'd rather not take cash for these chains, I think that'd insult Scott

Also, i figured I'd offer an example of a deal I'd accept. This is a trade thread, so if anyone wanted my lot of chains and desired to trade something else thats fine.

Ok. 1,2,10 I am interested in. I have no new chain sitting around and no pictures of cutter length...not to be rude but these are wild cards. I can ship you two 3/8-.050-72 square chains for them. There is a hitch.... I am moving right now. My shop is upside down and a minimum of three weeks before I can send anything out. Let me know.

All good Jimmy, but from my end I can get you pics of cutter length if you'd really like. They aren't as much of a wild card as you think.

If you have a couple 3/8 050 72 chains that are square ground, thats great, but I have no good way to maintain those .... i'm not to that point in my chainsaw career where I'm square grinding. Also, based on the fact that you don't have those chains in your hand right now, I'll have to decline the offer. Further, it just seems silly to you to ship /trade that small an amount of chain. It'll cost $6+ for a flat rate envelope to ship a couple chains, and thats nearly half the cost of a chain anyway. Doesn't make much sense... sorry.

in case anyone hasn't been paying attention to ebay... here is a 10 pack of chains, for $130, shipped

Don't be sorry, I don't NEED any chain. In all honesty, if I never bought any more chain I'll have enough to last me for ever. Also the shorter the cutter gets, the faster and better that chain gets.

Ok.. so you want NEW Oregon chain for your ground chains. Got it. I'll won't try to find those never filed RSC chains INB as you are looking just for Oregon.

Also, so you know, you can take the square ground chain, stick it right on that grinder and make it round ground in .02 seconds. BAM!

Good luck...

I'd suggest buying some presets and making what you want out of the pile. An 84 DL loop converts to 72 DL for less than a dollar and 3 minutes of work. If you don't want that, put a value on the chains. As you pointed out new chains are only $13 dollars/ea so call it $6.50/ea. Put all of them in a medium or large flat rate box and ship them for actual costs. Shipping is what it is. Take that money, buy the new chain you want/need.

Anyone give the man $84.50 plus shipping for the baggies of chain?

You are going pretty deep there. After the radius of the wheel passes the working corner there is no need to go any deeper if you have a properly dressed and shaped wheel. Going deep like that makes the chain grabby and will lead to shorter tooth life ultimately. Grabby chains are often perceived as better self feeders as it jerks the saw and such. In reality it is rough on clutches, rough on crank bearings, dulls easier with less working corner support, and is slower. A good chain self feeds while letting the saw maintain RPM and can be run with one hand easily when bucking logs.

As a 'thrifty' sawyer, and veteran scrounger, one of the most liberating things I discovered was the spinner and breaker at my local saw shop. This not only let me save/salvage/use almost any chain of the correct pitch and gauge (regardless of drive link count / loop size), but also repair damaged chains, by spinning out damaged cutters and replacing them with links from 'donor chains'.

Some guys just use a punch, anvil, and ball peen hammer.

But I prefer the spinner / breaker. Bought one of the Bailey's sets on sale, as a personal birthday present, after seeing it used in their shop. Posted a few threads on it on that other site. Mentioning Bailey's as that is the set that I use, and I don't see that our site host offers any. The Oregon set is nice too, and a bit more standard. I would avoid the cheap sets on eBay, where parts are not available.

Really a nice skill / ability to have. Solves the problem of loops that are off by a few links. Pays for itself after fixing/saving/scrounging just a few loops, especially when the cost of postage is figured in even on 'even' trades.

I have a bid in on a spinner on the bay.... please don't outbid me :)

I did JUST get some presets, so hopefully i'll be able to make use of some of the chain. still, the idea here was to be able to swap. ... I took a risk getting a pile of chain, now I've organized it, sharpened most of them, labeled them, and taken the ones I can use. would be nice to shuffle the lot onto the next guy who will keep that ball rolling.

yeah, seems like 6.50 a chain is about right. takes me about 20 minutes to grind a chain, so that comes out to a little less than $20/hr lol.

points take Jimmy, thanks. I am really trying to be reasonable about this whole thing. I really don't need to turn a profit here, just want some chain that is usable for me... and no I don't need the premium rsc stuff :) I'm ok w/ lowly Oregon lgx

You guys are something else! :rolleyes:Was he supposed to just sit on a bunch of chains he can't use? Or maybe give them to you for free, since he 'won' them in the raffle?

I got a box full of these "junk" chains from @Mattyo today. Amounts to around a 25' reel of 75 CJX.

Thanks Matt! Good luck on the spinner!
