What do you guys think of them? Looking to replace my 525 with a 540.

Stihl let their dealers know that mtrons would not be orderable at the sales meeting a month or so ago. May have something to do with Husky not listing them online. I'm sure they both have the same supply chain issues.

The 540 is not a well liked saw among climbers. For every climber I’ve heard say good about them I’ve heard 2 curse them.
Thx for the feedback. I do remember the first gen t handle auto tunes were also poorly received.

just want a bit more power than the 525 offers. It goes in the quad back seat storage area nicely. Also just want to buy something new is really what’s going on here lol. maybe I’ll see if the 562 will fit in the back without a bar…

6 months use and the rings are gone out of a 540, haven't heard of this changing yet.
The 201 is without a doubt the way to go for a serious climber. Finding one right now is another story, search in every Mom and Pop Stihl shop there is and a fella might get lucky.

Pass on the husky, had one years ago for side work never got it to run right, temperamental as *f-word, hot start issues, tunning issues sent it down the road, have an older 201 carb after they fixed the initial problems.

I’ve only overhauled one 201 tc and I was impressed. White fuel solenoid.[emoji106]

Get the tree guy to run 32:1 will help it live. [emoji57]

No problem… Many if the first gen auto tune and mtronic saws were poorly received. They had their share of growing pains. Many were happy with them too. For the most part the newest versions are fantastic. The 540T’s issue isn’t just a case of the AT being bad though. As Steve said rings wear out prematurely. Some guys have intake issues. Others have had x,y, or z go bad. I’m not mister brand homer either. I like most of them, but this is one case where you want to stay away from the Husky option. If you want to stick with team big orange, maybe a 550 will fit with a 14” bar and chain or a longer bar removed.

I asked my dealer about this today…he said some components that both Stihl & Husky were using are sourced from Ukraine. If that is actually true, that is unfortunate.

I saw a Stihl bulletin that said their wiring harnesses that were made in Ukraine and there would be a delay in receiving them, so dealers need to only order the carbed variants. Idk what part of the huskies are Ukrainian made, though.

Local tree service friend has run 540s for years, never had those stated problems, guys dropping them 50+ feet, slammed into a tree are his issues. Never seen one of his have ring problems, he does mix his gas personally. Think either saw will serve you, he just purchased his first 201, lasted less than a day. 201's blew apart, seems brittle to me.

Most Standing stem climbers here choose the 201, I have talked to multiple climbers about the top handle huskies and none had anything good to say about them.

I personally have an early non m-tron 201 with muffler mod, timing advance and the "update kit". I would say its stronger than my 200t. Hope this helps
