I would add that USPS in the long run is cheaper crossing US borders. I learned the hard way with UPS. Even though UPS initially was cheaper, with duties and fees added on UPS is more expensive. Yes this particular saw was marked for repair and return only. Thought this would help keeping the duties off but it didn't work out that way. You can print the necessary export paperwork through any carrier if you create your own labels. Thought this may help someone in the future. Canada, Europe, any border crossing pertains.

The UPS price I got was the cost of a port job. I need to try some other options.

@av8or3 I lost a military green 288 because of eBay intl shipping. Somehow turned up for sale again…I’ll just dye my ugly one some day maybe…

The problem is with eBay’s “global” shipping centers. The used saw I purchased on eBay from a fellow in the UK was impounded as “restricted” and I was refunded immediately. I stayed in contact with that fellow and as far as I know he was never refunded and the saw was destroyed (by his account). Do not use the EBay global shipping! They apparently have plenty of time to go thru this stuff under the guise of “correct packaging” and they will not let a used saw thru. Not sure about new.

I would not use eBay's global shipping program even if they paid me to use it.

The 3 times I used it all turned out poorly.

1st time, package went in some 3rd party off shore sort center, only to never be seen again. Buyer was refunded his money, I was out of mine.

2nd time, one medium sized box I sent was was opened up at some sort center, and items were condensed into two smaller boxes so they were within the size parameters, items that did not fit in the two smaller boxes were discarded. Buyer was refunded his money, I was out of mine.

3rd time, 3 smaller boxes of the same size, were sent to the same address, 2 got lost some place only god knows where (eBay never found or were able to track the other two) only one arrived to the destination. Buyer was refunded his money, I was out of mine.

Anytime I ship out of USA, I use USPS, fill out the customs form, insure it for what it's worth, and send it on it's way. Never had issue doing it that way.

eBay claims the global shipping program is hassle free. They GFT with that idea.....

USPS with tracking both ways to and from the US, very slow at times but I have yet to loose a package - knock on wood!

Shipping cost from Croatia to the US is acceptable.
Unfortunately shipping an identical package from the US to Croatia is much more expensive.

I tried an alternative shipping option once, it was a complete disaster with a bunch of hidden fees and delays - Sondre knows about it.
Went back to the Croatian PO and USPS in half a heartbeat - better safe (and moderately expensive) than sorry (and more complicated and much more expensive)!

Shipping 5lbs boxes from the US to Croatia through USPS comes to 80-95$.

145$ for a whole chainsaw is somewhat acceptable considering it was supposed to cost 600ish$ (IIRC) to ship my EA5000XS directly to Croatia!

Shipping just a P&C would indeed cost less.

How is the new job Tim?

USPS for 630 a lot more reasonable, $145

I imagine a 288 cylinder would be a lot less.
That's a decent deal. Just be sure and mark the import paperwork properly David.
On another note for the Ebay Global shipping issues from others I'm surprised. I haven't had issues as long as ship to country doesn't restrict power tools/chainsaws. It all gets processed through Kentucky when shipping from the USA.

All of this sounds like a pita.
Not really. Just a process and after the first one it's easy peasy.
David, none of my business for sure. But why aren't you sending the crankcase and piston along with the cylinder? That way timing, porting, and machine work will all be married specifically to the engine assembly? Just asking no need to answer if I'm out of line.

No worries...it's way cheaper to send a cyl than a big fat 288. I can shim for squish, etc. if need be. I'll be mighty disappointed in them Swedes machine work if something is way off. :D

Or get the #'s from the cylinder while it's on your case and let the porter know what they are.

UPS just texted me for another $46 in import fees. Looks legit. Normal?
