Sweet old saw. They don't Rev high but they keep the revs they spin. What did you do to it? Manual oiler?

New fuel line and filter was all it needed. It had not be ran in years.

You just gave me a blast from the past with that saw!

My Dad's first saw was an XL400 that he used to clear the land where his house now sits back in 1973-1974 or so. I think before he got it, the saw belonged to his grandfather. I remember that saw, the way it sounded, and how cool it looked with that bright chrome mesh around the recoil. Sometime in the early 80s the saw burned down and back in those days before the internet he could not source parts for it if I recall.. Possible it just wasn't cost effective for him too. I was pretty young and I'm not 100% sure the reason why it wasn't fixed. A year or two after it was put in the basement blown up he told me he wanted to see if I could get it apart to see the damage. I don't think I was more than 7 or 8 years old at the time. I got quite a bit of it apart and my pipe dream at the time was that it became MY saw and dammit I was going to make it run again! LOL!

It was in 1986 that Dad bought a brand new Johnny-Red 455 to replace his blown up XL400. We still have that 455 to this day and it has served our family nearly flawlessly all these years..

Thanks for posting that vid, it brought back some memories for me.. Seems as though the XL400 just isn't all that common to find these days. I have searched for one on occasion when I have some extra money in my pocket to buy for Dad just to be a cool gift. But I haven't yet come across one. But now it's too late as Dad's state of health has made it so he cannot run a saw ever again.

I just got my old XL500 running last night...hadn't run in several years...rebuilt the carb...got an NOS carb as a spare...new fuel line...kept starving out last evening...let it sit...went out today, problem gone! Fired right up and kept running! Tuned it, good to go!
