I believe you are right. Overcoming our hang-ups and harmful tendencies is an indication of growth. The man that had a hot-temper and used to fly off the handle is making progress when he contains himself, walks away, and/or refuses to enter into verbal conflicts. These are things that show progress is being made. It should be noted and appreciated.

As an aside, I believe the song was written by song writer Aaron Wilburn concerning his father. Though I could be mistaken. Aaron died of Covid this year. He was a Gospel singer, song writer and a bit of a comedian.
