OK so today I saw first hand what a tornado can do. This was a documented EF1, whatever that means.Anyway for over 7 miles oak trees were laid out like something I have never seen before. I will get pictures tomorrow.Anyway houses had trees on the roofs, cars and trucks had trees on top of them. What bothers me is all this work and know one anywhere with a chainsaw to help out. One homeowner had a skid steer but otherwise virtually no other machinery. If a man had a couple helpers and a couple saws he could do very well.I am in the central portion of Missouri.

After the hurricane it was kind of the same. Very few people were properly prepared, lots of chainsaws that didn’t start/didn’t run/dull chains. The problem is all the ‘scabs’ that come in from out of state and price gouge the hell out of people ($7,000 to buck one tree up and remove it from the roof, no removal from property, no stump grinding, not even stacking it up. Literally less than an hour worth of work). It pissed me off something fierce. I gave 5 saws to neighbors and good folks so they could take care of themselves and their neighbors.

I’m not saying don’t go and make some money, i’m just saying be fair and considerate to those who are already in a bad way.

Mother nature is no joke.

After hurricane Sandy, some of my neighbors had large Silver maples come down. 2 of them had estimates of 1800 and 2300. My son and I cut both trees up and removed everything but the stumps in 4 days. I did nit charge them anything. But I did get a $200 gift card from a divorced lady who lived with her kids. The other guy who ironically owned a storm damage company never even gave me a thank you. That included going out in the eye of the storm and cutting the limb that took down the power line drop to his house. Lol. Go figure.

Point being, as soon as there is a "storm", many tree companies up their rates and don't show up for weeks.

Do we have any members here in distress?

Dayton, OH was hit hard. Have a lot of friends up that way. Mr. Snelling is in Franklin which is just south of Dayton, but it sounds like it landed more north of there. @blsnelling You good? I wanted to head that way and help where I could. Unfortunately leaving from Columbus today for my great uncle's memorial service in Vermont. Something I just cannot miss.

We’ve had 2 near folks I know this year. Vado mounds got flattened by tornados in April and north of Gatesville TX got hammered the next week.
They say the area I live in is fairly well protected because of the 5 hills that surround this area. The problem they say is that if one hits inside of the 5 hills it will bounce like a pinball and destroy everything.

Glad to hear so far everyone is ok!

I wouldn't believe that hill thing. The tornado that hit east of me Tuesday started in the hills south of Lawrence KS then went through the river valley and back up in to the hills in a pretty straight line. Thankfully no one was killed.

A large contributor to direction and turns is the strength higher up in the atmosphere. Unless the system is weak up high, the tornados tend to follow relatively straight line as dictated by the direction the front is traveling and atmospheric pressures, unless the terrain features are quite large and abrupt (steep hills, cliffs, etc.) Weaker tornados can be influenced by terrain features and can give you the “bounce around” effect but they tend to die out very quickly.

According to previous training as a National Weather Spotter and the NWS.
