I have a tree service that I maintain saws for. He has started complaining of loosing the clutch drum retaining washer and E clip on multiple saws; MS441, MS440, 036... and I think even his 066. Some of these I have rebuilt, some are dead stock from Stihl. I have never had an issue with E clips unless I did not seat them fully when installing them.

Some of the clips are OEM, some are from DDave, some from HL. What am I missing or is it the way he/his crew is using the saws? Anyone else ever have this issue?

The Chinese ones are absolute garbage. They're made from old tin cans and garbage cans. The heat treat is awful, so they don't have any spring. Let me know if you'd like to know how I really feel about them lol...

As far as OEM, not a clue unless he's getting the clutch/crank so hot that the clips are becoming annealed?

I have had issue with the am clips not having a good temper and falling off. Same as wrist pin clips. Something to look at to see if they are not springing in after they push over the crank.

If they noodle a lot or cut with the saw bottomed out on the ground, the longer chips or build up within the clutch cover will peel them off. That is what I’ve found.
This is a real possibility. They brake a lot of larger rounds down for handling and ability to put them through a chipper.

I'll mention that to him and switch him to OEM circlios.
