Not sure if I am understanding correctly, you are potentially wanting to put 3/8 semi on the 251? If so, I would not. However, if you are talking about the 261...then I would say go for it. i run my 261 with a 20" bar 3/8 RSF...it purrs. I also have two 271, but I won't put 3/8" on those saws, the .325 on 20" bars work just fine, though I did change out the spur sprockets with the .325 rim drum/sprockets from a 261.

I always ran 20'' 3/8 on mine.
