Looking for one, maybe two, or who knows, three stihl 038 magnum or super builders. Anything from a good crankcase up to full saw. Thanks

Thank you. Out of all the saws and builders I have, for some reason, the 038 build options/scenarios won’t fade out of my mind. I know it’s not a popular saw these days but I’m starting to think it’s my unicorn.

I do believe, out of all the saws ive worked on and cut timber with that the 038 is hands down the most reliable unit made to date. Sure, it isnt the fastest, and is lacking in the air filter department. But overall its built like a tank, this is the ONLY saw i will trust running a lewis chainsaw winch 100 miles from nowere pulling an elk or moose out of a 1000 foot ravine.

I only have minimal experience with it and the one I own is just an 038av. I love the sound, the vibrations it makes, the feel, man, I just fell in love with it. The bigger version built to brand new condition, well I just might lose it.

None of these are Magnum cases.7AB35611-566D-43E1-BE83-597695B647FD.jpeg

Thanks for the pic. Are those 50mm cylinders on the cases or just 038 av. I’d like to get one that a 52mm jug would bolt on to. I know they can be slotted but I don’t have the precision equipment to do it right.

I share this affection for 038s. My father and uncle bought an ex demo 038av in about 1980. It came to us without having done much work and it has been in constant use ever since. The first saw I bought myself was an 038 Super and I have been wanting a Magnum for years. They just don't come up at sensible money in the UK or Ireland. As a consequence I bought a set of hutzl cases and they are due to go together with SKF bearings, a genuine Stihl crankshaft that may not even have an hour's work on it and a used OEM Magnum P&C that did come my way at the right price. I rebuilt a nice 038 Super last year and an 038FB the year before so I'm watching your progress on this project with interest! When I first pieced together the 038FB, I slotted an aftermarket 52mm cylinder to fit the 50mm case and it ran well until I loaned it out..... It is running nicely again with a used 50mm cylinder and an AIP piston.

I just don’t understand what it is that has me all mesmerized about this saw. I have a brand new MS661, a MS440 that I ported and did the other usual mods to with all new OEM parts and plastics, several 193’s, 201c, 391,362,311,250, and 260. So really, I should be using an 038 as a paper weight but it just doesn’t feel like my life will be complete without building myself the baddest 038 possible. Man, I need to see a doctor and get some help! HaHa

And I’m just about to overpay for a nice looking super. If so, I may be slotting some mounting holes.

Did the 038 magnum ever have a magnesium rear handle?

I’m not sure on them exactly. Think I have at least one 50mm and one 48mm.
You can have all of it for the shipping if you want. I have some other small parts as well.

I passed on a Super Mag II a few years back. I was not to healthy and not messing with saws at all. Shoulda grabbed it but I don't like to hoard.

I don’t like to hoard either, but I just enjoy this too darn much. I can’t figure out if it’s a passion or obsession. Either way, there are way worse things I could be doing with my free time.

The Mag II would be a cool saw to have. It may not have been a popular saw but the metal ID badge on them is super slick. “Super Mag II” that just sounds like a saw that’s gonna try and rip your arm off.

Anything new out there? I hear there might be a triple outlet muffler that came on some of these. Anybody seen one of these?
