Hello all, I just joined the forum after lurking for 2 years. As my profile states, I’m a young guy from Texas and I hope that you amazing people here are willing to help me out.
Anyways, I’ve been looking into purchasing an early model 026 for $100. It appears to have little damage on the outside with a clean recoil, clutch cover, and top cover. I’m pretty dead set on buying it, but I wanna see what you guys say.

Sounds like a great deal. Go to the auto parts store on the way to look at it and pick up a t-27 torx screwdriver. Pop the muffler cover off and make sure the piston isn't scored. My first used saw purchase was an 026. It had a scored piston so I speak from experience. That's also what brought me to chainsaw forums.

Thanks for the advice! I happen to have a T27 at my house. I plan to go down there tomorrow and check the muffler.
Good luck! Let us know how it shakes out and take some pics. Even if it's scored if you can haggle the price down we can walk you through repairing it.

I just got back from the guy selling the saw. It turns out that someone snagged it before I could, got me bummed out. Now I know to jump on a deal as soon as I see it.

Welcome to the forum @ayoungtexan

Lots of good people here, that are willing to help, and it looks like Tim has already given you some good advice.

Bummer on missing the saw, but there will be others. Soon enough you'll have a collection... Trust me. Lol.

Thanks. I would have a collection by now, but being that I’m still in high school, I’m living under my parents roof. My dad would be pretty pissed off if I had more than 1 saw lol. But otherwise, I’d have shed full of old Macs.
Just buy Rattler's 395
and be done with it!
