A sorta local dealer has one I'm more of a jonsered guy so what is it? I assume it's a 024 super? What's the vintage? Is it a good saw?

I have a little 024 AV (no super) that has a fried P&C. Have not ripped into it yet, but I'm hoping when I do that I can clean up the cylinder and that pistons are still available and that nothing else is wrong with it.

Can someone tell me the difference between the Super and the non super?

Thanks.

@czar800 or @Tpagel made a 42mm 024 run very very well. IIRC, it beat up his ported 026.

There's potential in that lil saw Mikey. I have one here that I'm gonna try to shoehorn a 26 jug onto at some point. With the shorter stroke and the proper timing, I could see it really singing.

FWIW from what the hear the 024 and 026's had around three mufflers .One was highly restrictive, one so so and one more open.

The 024 I have was of the restrictive nature which slightly scorched the exhaust side of the piston, not bad .I just gutted the muffler and ran it .For 42cc's or whatever it does just fine.

I don't know about the super but mine does not have an adjustable oil pump .Not a big deal it dumps enough oil for a 16" bar .

It might be possible to use an 026 cylinder, not sure .If it's a deal like using an 038 mag cylinder on an 038 AV you have to change the cylinder bolt hole location ,not worth the effort IMO.

That is funny Al, I was going to ask if that was possible!

When I have time to pull the jug I will see what it looks like. Piston looks about the same damage as the one in the 440, and I was able to salvage that jug.

Are pistons for these things available?

Wow, nice job there Al. After doing that, I'll but you just tell the Girl Scouts you don't need any more! That saw is definitely cutting out of it's league.

So let's see, I nee a crank, an jug & a slug!!!

I've worked on three of these puppies. They are good little saws, but you will pay a young fortune for an air filter. I've rebuilt two 024 engines. One I upgraded to an 026 but that required new plastic and a cheap 026 air filter. Heck, the plastic cost the same as an 024 air filter. All in all, it was a good experience. Put it this way, a new MS 261 costs the same or more than all three of the saws I worked on put together. So, I have three that run for the price of one.

Here's a couple of shots that I just took:

There is no decomp valve, so I sealed the hole in the plastic shroud with a filler. The saw needs a decomp valve like a hole in the head. I really like using this Stihl 024/026 hybrid. It turned out even better than I expected. And, the air filters aren't going to cost me an arm and a leg.

I started my 024/026 hybrid today, just to make sure that it ran OK. It did. Frankly, I need to take this saw into the field more often than I do. It's a keeper. Dang good firewood saw.
