I have had this Stihl 020av sitting around for a few years and have the time to go through it. I discovered that there was a stripped-out case screw while doing the vac/pressure test. I have the case split. All screws and pins have been removed but am not sure what's the best way to separate the halves. I am wondering about using a heat gun around the bearings and a plastic hammer. Does anyone know of a safe method to separate the crankshaft from the case halves without any special Stihl tools? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Put the flywheel nut back on and tap on the end of the crankshaft with a brass hammer while holding the flywheel side crankcase half.

The halves do twist to a point. I could use wooden blocks to support one half and try that method. I am leery of the bearings. I don't want to damage them. I will try it if the heat gun method doesn't work. Or along with the heat method. Thank you for the help.

According to the directions from Stihl they recomend knocking it apart with a rubber hammer .I don't think thumping it with a brass hammer would be a good idea .Could damage a bearing .

Ok. Thank you for that information. I am about to tackle this. I will try with a rubber hammer first. I will let you know how it goes.

The halves have been separated with no damage to anything. The heat gun made all the difference. I used the high setting, going around the outer edge of the bearing on the drive side for about a minute. Set a couple blocks under the half that I was trying to separate. With one rap of the rubber hammer the crankshaft and bearing popped out of the case. I was a little surprised at how easy it came apart. Thanks to everyone who gave me the helpful instruction.
