I have two cheap HF Micrometers....and they are....cheap and unreliable for accuracy...quite serviceable for hand grenade tossing and horseshoe wars but not much else. I've done a few "Ebay" searches and Mitutoyo seems to be the best/value but there is wide pricing within the 6" sizes Im looking for.

1) what are the differences ?
2) what other brands are you using and why ?
3) what's a reasonable price to pay for a fully functional reliable one ?

thx

I believe it will go out to 6". I actually have two of them. One I bought new the other I got off of ebay used. They both work well.

I have a HF digital micrometer... cost $9.00. I like it a lot. use it often... it always matches same readings am my dial mircrometer when I ck it for accuracy. :) sorry to hear some have had probs, as digital micrometers are nice... but accuracy is important. I take very good care of mine, always house in container and orig box... I keep extra moisture absorbers in it, and have padded the dial a bit more... :dance1:

I have a HF also because it can give a mm reading as well as in inches. I have had no problems with mine either. Like you I keep all my calipers in their original boxes to keep them protected.

A few thou either way ain't gonna matter. If you are worried about being too tight, cut a beer can gasket and fly it.

Any cheap caliper works fine, we aren't looking for .0001 accuracy with squish. Most guys shoot for a range of a few thousands and call it good. Most builds I have seen read something like " I was shooting for .020 , it came in at .018 or .021 , I'm gonna run it, should be fine."

I use square toothpicks. If it turns over without resistance sans gasket, fine. Otherwise it gets a base gasket.

And, look see if free porting.

I have a Mitutoyo and its worth the xtra coin.

It's so on the money that i stopped using my micrometer. Its never off Angelo.

I also have a Chinese Dial indicating one. Its OK, not as accurate, but the batteries never burn out and surprise you.

You dont need it to be more than .001 accurate for squish.
