How do I get 600 grit in the ring land?
I usually break the old ring in half and square it off with the bench grinder and go about it that way.
Just fold it in half and clean buildup out, if there's a bad spout you'll notice. If the buildup is that bad I soak in solvent, you don't want to round anything off. I've used a ring to dig crud out, but that was on a super high hour piston.

I use a broken ground ring like the OP and/or someone mentioned.

Looks like you started this thread based on caution but already had your game plan in mind :)
