When running my saw, when I turn it to where the bar is facing down it runs good. When the bar is facing up it tries to die. Which of the seals is bad?
Also, is it normally the bar side seal that wears out first?

It may be you're a little rich on the low needle. There was a thread about it but I can't find it. If tilting while reving doesn't make it die, try this test. Let it sit at idle for 20 seconds, then try tilting. The idea is that mix may be accumulating and flooding it out. A leaking seal would lean it out making it speed up.

If the clutch side has overheated, the seal gets stiff and can leak. Just did one on my 088 mill saw.

Could be the carb, try the above first

Also, try letting it idle for 20-30 seconds and then tip it forward and backward. That will indicate if it's a fuel puddling/delivery issue.

Some of the Stihls will puddle fuel in the intake boot at times.

Can't get the carb dialed in. Thinking a leak somewhere. Gonna do the seals

Usually a carb needs a rebuild kit when it doesn't respond to tuning. I'm not saying the seals aren't bad, but the carb will still respond to tuning if the leak isn't excessive. There could be a cracked fuel line or the fuel filter could be lodged in the tank where it gulps air when the saw tips.

Just craps out. I just swapped top end onto a "new" case. Including rebuilt carb. No idea about seals condition. Had just put new seals in previous case when saw that was leaking. Looked like it had been previously split and sealed back with non fuel resistant sealer.
What's your opinion as to whether the seals I put in the other case can be salvaged?

You can't reuse seals that press in. I suppose if the bearing shares the same surface then it can press the seal out with no damage after you split the case but it may not seal when reused.
