Ok I know the 170 is like a throw away. It starts and runs but compression is really low and it smokes a lot. I see pistons and cylinders are way cheap so maybe I’ll give that a shot I’m not sure yet.

Now the reason for the deal the 361. It starts up on full choke and it idles at a normal speed if I leave it on full Choke. If I move it to half choke it revs to the moon then immediately dies. Any suggestions?

Carb rebuild. If that don’t work, replace it.
Other than that…pull muffler and check piston. Do vac/pres test.
170s with a good muffler mod will cut like a 250.

Yes it is...but it was free so you can have some fun with it. For some real fun, the Milwaukee 7" bar does fit on the saw and I believe with a 31 driver chain (you may have to make it yourself if you have access to chain tools), but it would be a ripper!

As for the 361, possibly a dirty carb, need to clean it out and replace diaphragms if they are stale.

Thank guys. hopefully I can dig into it this weekend. The 170 is funny if you hold it by the door it just falls down under it s own weight the compression is so low.

Pull the muffler and look to see if there is any scoring on the piston, that might give you an idea of what you are getting into before pulling the cylinder off.

The 361 could be anything from carb clean and rebuild to air leak. First thing is looks over the fuel line make sure it’s not ripped or soft, put new filter on if line looks good. Clean and rebuild carb probably needs it anyway then pressure and vac test saw for air leaks.

They don't have a lot of compression and are very east to pull.

I got the carb off the 361 and douched it out good. Diaphragm looked fine so I out that back together. I got it running good and it revs real fast. It was dark so I was using a flashlight so I didn’t get to do any cuts. I was trying to get it to burble at wot but it really wasn’t. I gotta see if that screw is doing anything. The screw does seem a little bent when you turn it. Good news so far though. I opened up the muffler a little aswell.

I opened up the muffler on the 170 now the idle is a little fast so I gotta turn that down and see how it goes. I used it a bit before the muffler mod and it works but it’s crappy haha.

Your 170 carb has tuning screws? I wonder if someone switched it out and/or dropped in an AM carb.
