I'd have to disagree about being dollars ahead unless a builder saw can't be found reasonable.
I have $300 into this MS460 and that included purchase of the saw.

The brake handle, air filter base and flywheel bearing (Koyo) are the only non oem parts.

Take a new Stihl 462c, locally they run $1400... ported = $1750
Take a new Clone Stihl 440, $300... ported $650...
Difference $1100.
Say the Stihl lasts 4 years using it 5 days a week 5hrs a day...
Say the Clone lasts 2 years... with the same amount of time on it... 2 clone ported saws is $1300... then on the 4th year you purchased another now you have $1950 in 3 clones which will last 6yrs...
On the 4th year you purchase another 462c and have it ported... = $3500 in two ported 462s...

$3500-$1950 = $1550 difference. The price gap between OEM and AM is a major factor. I know guys who have been running the clone saws for 4yrs and they're starting to get tired.... they use the 77 and below saws for the grunt work and use their high dollar saws for the big work... they all say they have saved thousands of dollars doing it.

I'll agree... you can find used saws all over, but, their prices are climbing... it's getting harder and harder to find a good used saw around these parts... people abuse them and then toss them into a pile or try to sell them for what they paid for them 4, 5, 6 years ago... thats around these parts anyway.

Same in the Atlanta area.

"I will not take less. I know what I got!" - not an uncommon phrase found on two month old truck and chainsaw listings.

Feel free to buy the clone stuff if you like...heck, I have built a couple for some friends, but I wouldn't waste any breath trying to convince others that it is a good idea. I built & ported a 372 for fun and gave it to a local who runs a tree service. He loved the saw until the crank broke..he figured he didn't even get 10 gallons through the saw before it failed.

Obviously the clone saws are a subpar piece of equipment when compared to OEM... the rate of failure is greater on these clones as well... but, we all know this.. are there exceptions? Absolutely. I've built clones that are still going strong out in the woods... have I had them fail, Absolutely... have I had Husky cranks spread and rub the case? more than my fair share... lol. Have I had a stihl crank spread? Nope. Have I have a clone crank fail? Nope. My clone 660 with a 2 piece head, I've spun that up to 17,640rpms ahahaha "Hulzilla"... that saw is still running to this day. 🤣
I had to put the I'm a Stihl guy or I'm a Husky guy to the side and look at things from a practical stance... in some cases the Clone saws win outright... but, regardless of my affiliation or bias outlook towards one saw manufacturer to the next, you can build a good reliable clone saw for pennies and get your money out of them. I've built and ran enough clones to know what I'm getting.
I'm not an exclusive Stihl guy or Husky guy... I prefer stihls but I also like the older huskys... I love pioneers and homelites too... lol. My Mac is ok... and the Canadien is pretty cool as well... they all have their place and it depends on the variables at hand.

All I know is for some strange reason, beyond much logic, I am thinking about something worse then a clone chainsaw, a 1990s 4x4 Honda mini-truck with a dump bed and locking rear axle. The only thing holding me back is thinking about my legs if someone crashes into me head on. :ghost:

I'm a buy once cry once guy. Most of the time I'd rather buy OEM up front, especially when it comes to power equipment.

Everyone has different reasons, but for me the extra money at the start is made up for in productivity and knowing that my above average land owner use is still nothing compared to the professional use the tool was designed for. My 046 starts on 3 pulls every time since 1998. My kids will probably still be using my 500i long after I'm dead.

Providing our Country becomes a manufacturing and production nation again...
But, I agree... we all have our likes, dislikes, sticking points, etc... and that's what is great about free thinking, free markets, etc... variety is the spice of life. Lol

I have yet to buy any clones, but several OEM 020T/200T's I own have several AM pieces on them (namely plastics). I love finding OEM builder saws that are wrecked (there are lots of them out there) but as has already been stated someof the asking prices (namely fleabay and MP) are ridiculous. What's even crazier is PEOPLE ARE PAYING IT!

Two wrecked saws that recently went across my bench (and are staying in my collection) are the slant fin 10mm/12mm combo 044 and the graveyard 084AV I just built. The 044 is a damn fine runner. I'm really hoping to have the 084 buttoned up tomorrow or Thursday and fired by Friday. Still gotta make the baffle for the custom muffler I just built. I plan on building a pipe for it someday.20230305_125620.jpg20230305_125644.jpg20230305_220941.jpg20230305_220949.jpg20230305_124721.jpg

You forgot to factor in the 17 half-days lost repairing the clone in those 2 years at $6800. Not to mention the cost of parts at…$46

These guy's will *s-word on you for having clone saws
Which I always thought it was funny
Since this is probably the biggest site selling am part's and saws
My 365/372s have paid for themselves several times
Over the last 4+ year's
I gave most of them out to family and friends to run I have stacks of saws not being run.
I doubt any of them would give them up now they constantly brag on them
Especially since they were running
Small homeowner clamshells mostly.
