Sanding the squish band question?

I've only done one jug so I'm no expert. I made up this mandrel out of some vinyl stuff I had laying around. I used a long 5/16 carriage bolt with dubble nuts for the shaft and glued the sandpaper on. My question is has anyone ever sanded underwater or used water to keep the paper clean? I used a bucket of warm water and held the jug in the water while it was spinning or just out of the water but kept flushing it really seem to help how well it sanded and keep the paper a lot clearer.

I've used spray oil before, but it clogged up quickly. I sand for about 3 seconds, dump it out, and sand again. Mine didn't clog that way

I did mine in the solvent tank, and that seemed to work well. If I use a ball hone then I do that under the running spigot in the solvent tank as well.

Is this a way to cut the squish band?

For small amounts. I put the mandrel in the lathe and slip the cylinder on and hold it by hand.

I do it all by hand. No drill or lathe, but the most I sand out is maybe .005 max.
