Had an unfortunate breakdown with my 254 Husky, so need to split the case and do a crank swap with a 262 case I have here. Getting down to the pressed on brass worm gear removal necessitated a removal tool....I'm all about quick and easy so a 1/2 x 1" NPT bushing and a 1" pipe cap with a hole in it and I was set.....

Thread it onto the brass worm gear and a two jaw puller grabs the edge of the pipe cap nicely

Voila!.......No damage to the gear

Thanks for posting the picts of this puller, the question gets asked frequently, I try to explain it in words but a pict is worth many hundred. I will link any future requests, directed to me, to your thread and picts.

Yes, there are numerous reports of how to use a 1/2" NPT pipe nipple, a union, and a bolt to cobble something together to get the worm gear off without having to split the case.

I'm also impressed with your use of "Voila"... I often see a lot of people post "Walla", and I just laugh.

It’s Voilá Fred. U missed the accent. 5 years of useless French taken here.

This is a cool trick you guys posted. I used a 3 jaw cheapO puller with a hose clamp around the bottom to hold the jaws on. Your way is much easier.

Bottom pic is my setup. Just so others know, all those bits were bought at a hardware store for about $6. Works great.
