After viewing the photo, US National Weather Service Medford Oregon stated to Scott Valley News, "I've seen these happen and they're really cool. The sun is rising, but still below the horizon. The sunlight is still being blocked by a distant mountain, which we have determined is Mt. Shasta. Sunlight is able to shine on the clouds from beneath, except in the area where it is blocked by the mountain (shadow). Nice shot!"
