A friend brought his log splitter over and we split up a bunch and he took some wood home. That night he made a fire in the fireplace for his wife, and one crawled out onto the mantle. She was less than thrilled!
Turkey oak is littered with these in various sizes, pinky finger big is about the biggest I encountered.

My mom's chicken go nuts for these.

We get the same grubs here in different species. Years ago, I had a small house up in the mountains where I would cut a lot of old-growth Fir and Lodgepole for firewood. I usually came up with
a couple dozen of those grubs in about a 1/2 hour chopping wood. The Blue Jays got to the point where they would line up every time I started chopping. They were all over
those grubs. I also found a bunch of the large Cicada grubs buried behind my shop - I left those out and the Skunks would come along and eat them.

So instead of spending the money they just cut a hole in patched floor that used to be the opening for the escalator when this was a Sears built in 1964.

Talk about WTF.
