Hey guys, just wondering how things are actually shaking out in CA with the ban on newly manufactured internal combustion engines. How are loggers and firefighters getting their saws now? Illegally from out of state? Fixing up old saws more than they used to? Is there any anticipation of a growth in the OPE repair market? Has that already happened? I wonder if it will become more like Cuba, where people are still driving fixed up 1950’s cars. Or is there just a bunch of “illegal” new equipment coming in anyways? I was talking with my wife, who is from CA, about the idea of moving out there and opening a repair shop to catch the market trend. Is that totally delusional?

Shelves are still stocked at the power equipment parts and repair shops with gas burners of every variety in the Sac metro. Fair amount of lawn servicing in my neighborhood and if there's a battery mower, hedge trimmer or blower in use with a lawn service I haven't seen it. Only top handle saws I've seen in use are gas. Like most everywhere, codes don't get enforced unless residents press it. Which region are you looking at moving to?

My local shops have saws as well but it’s a small area so I’d say it’s NOS. The ace hardware has one 2511t on the shelve for the last couple years. I should buy it now that we are talking about this haha.

Yes. Moving TO Cali at present is most certainly delusional. Moving there to start a small business is way way beyond delusional.

Next question…

🤣

I know Redding area has steady logging, but the tweaker and tweaker related behaviors look to be higher than elsewhere. Chico is worth a look. Haven't been there. Thinning and tree removal is getting busier for obvious reasons everywhere. North of the bay area may have logging and arborist business. Santa Rosa, Sonoma............ There are probably some towns along the coast where Redwood logging is steady.

For business reasons, I assume you want to be close to or in a good size town.

I am south of the Bay Area and there is nothing even resembling a shortage of small ICE-powered equipment. Yes the littler stuff under 40cc has been eliminated due to battery powered equivalents being available now.
As to moving to CA it really depends on where you want to move. I can drive 6 hours away and I feel like I'm in another country things are so different. Cost of living varies but it's only going up. Location, location, location. The local small engine repair shop is thriving, and has been for about 30+ years now. There are a TON of arborist/tree care companies within a 100 mile radius and with winter storms and wildfire mitigation efforts there is no shortage of tree work. The "dicky" part is when you get into larger machinery and the need to be Tier 4(?) or whatever compliant. The local repair shop did tell me of one instance where some nosy neighbor came out and informed the guy running a chipper that they knew it was not emissions compliant and that the police were on their way. I don't know the outcome of that situation but no state should encourage its citizens to rat on other people. I feel bad for the small operators who can't easily afford a new $45k chipper but that's the deal. And your large vehicle with GVWR of 14k+ had better have a DPF or it won't be registered here. I know someone who moved out from upstate New York and we can beach about things here as good as anyone but then he'll say "You gotta' admit though, the weather kicks azz." In any situation you have to evaluate the good with the bad and reach your own conclusion as to whether or not it's worth it. No offense intended here but there's no amount of money that will get me to move where it snows for months out of the year--I don't even own a single pair of pants. I'll know I'm getting old when I start shopping for pants.

A little ways north or south of the Bay and tucked behind a hill is the ideal location, IMO. Sacramento is laid back but like all the valley is hell most summer days. I doubt police in Sacramento would answer a call about a wood chipper. Big town/small cities I wouldn't live in are Bakersfield, Modesto and Fresno, Riverside. Redding maybe but probably not.
