Hey Red, I know this is an old thread, but what is the rim drum set up you speak of. I made an offer for a brand new echo 590 ($175) and I am just wonder what on the 590 is lacking, and I guess telling from this thread the coil...and rim drum thing?

Coil is nice but not required. Even when ported you can still use the stock 590 coil.
The rim drum set up, replaces the stock spur to drive the chain. When it wears out you replace a 5-8$ rim, instead of a 30$ish spur. If you plan to use the saw a ton, the rim setup could be worthwhile. Also makes it really easy to try different chain pitch, and 7,8,9+ counts for faster chain speed.
