This is the majority of the parts changed out.
Looks like me....I think I will replace this and it will be good to go. I get on Amazon or other sites and see cool things that are relatively inexpensive to swap out and $100-200 later.....

I’m amazed that saw even runs, 🤪
Me too really, previous had jug base reduced and gasket delete. Thought safe to do gasket delete with not much care seeing as I wasn’t reducing base and would have lots of ceiling left. No. Spark plug was chicken scratching piston and sending current through body. Went to Napa picked up 4 BMR7A instead of the BPMR7A that came with cylinder. I indexed them and picked one.
Straight off tripped decompression then several pulls later fired up. Ran for a minute. In that minute I was very pleased as it idled , accelerated and came back to idol.
Then the fly wheel came unseated.
By all indications it was oiling but of course longer duration will tell.
Will have to get used to resetting decompression as it’s a pretty heavy sob with not much give.

If the flywheel already ordered doesn’t show by the twentieth ,Amazon said to get refund next day. So I should show a little restraint. Curious, AF or OEM. The only reason I didn’t lap a month ago was our Canadian tire doesn’t have it stocked and over thought possible advance in flywheel itself. With you experts giving me some insight that I couldn’t find keeping one more oem part appeals.
Appreciate . Thanks

I don't think Stihl ever made a timing-advanced flywheel for the 038. They've always used the "universal" ignition as far as I know (0000-400-1300).

The universal ignition is a dummy coil. You're probably shearing the flywheel key due to not having the flywheel nut torqued correctly.
Clean surfaces help too. I goofed up and didn't clean the taper on my 066 once, it fired up and ran till the chain hit the wood and that was game over. I brakleened the snot outta the surfaces and ran it with no key for a few weeks till a 10-pack of keys I ordered showed up. I torqued it down with a Ryobi impact driver both times so I know it wasn't the torque per se. The flywheel was so stuck when I got it that I had to wick wax down the taper for it to bust loose, and that wax was still present when I cleaned it after the busted key.

Oem, used. I’ll pull out the 038 bin and see what’s there

That can make a big difference.

Well, checked my 038 box. Seems the only flywheel left went out with the case I had. 🙄
Just a bunch of recoils, covers and some misc left.

Gone threw a quarter tank.

Going to continue running a tank through it. Had to turn it off to take one of my grandchildren home, but would not turn of and choked er off. When she’s empty and I bring it back inside I may ask for some ensight, if I can’t figure it out.

So ran tank threw, no hiccups at all. Ran ten minutes with tank half full 40-1 then filled 50-1 and ran till thirsty. Started a little lean then got way fat then settled rich. Should be good straight 50-1 next tank.oiler worked really well. Vibrated oil cap loose and made a mess and one bar nut.
But I could not get it to turn off.
I assume problem at the air box but really not sure how it should look. It appears to have lost connection in the off position , maybe filter pressure keeping it touching?
Had to sand filter to fit and tolock cover as well as proper choke response.

I cleaned , torqued and applied blue on the nut. New key. Did not lap and used original flywheel , It has held for a tank. I’ll run another tank through then patiently wait to free up cash for a bar and chain. Will cross fingers doesn’t come loose when it hits wood.

If it held for a tank I wouldn't stress too much.
