Most STIHL pistons are machined at the factory in Virginia Beach, some are done in Germany. Back in the day some were bought from Mahle and some other vendors but not anymore.

If made in VB within the last 25 yrs or so the top will look like this, as well as possibly have a logo cast underneath.

Most plastic parts will have the STIHL logo in place somewhere. Cast parts will also have some kind of marking as well, usually an 11 digit part number and /or the logo as well.

Not sure on the origin of that piston?

Stihl pistons used to be stamped on the top A B A/B or C for size. The arrow pointing towards front had the Stihl logo in a square on the "shaft" of the arrow. May be casting marks on the underside.

Hard to see the Arrow/logo on this one unless you blow it up. Right above the sharpie label 036 6.

They don’t do the cylinder bore and piston matching set up anymore far as I know. All pistons are within tolerance for all cylinders now. This was more of the ks, mahle days and I think they have just went to one range for everything. I’d imagine its easier to hold a range with cnc milling centers ect.

Lots of the pistons I’ve seen had Stihl cast inside of skirt also but not all.
