With the trails opening Friday or Saturday in north west Wisconsin this weekend we decided to take a day trip with some friends and family. I was torn which way to go but decided on a trail called the Stoney Brooke which I like to travel for the scenery and water. I normally run up to the top side of the start and head back down which leaves me closer to the truck and trailer and less dusty travels at the end of the day. Yesterday I decided to take the turn off on the south end and go up which lead to an adventurous day to say they least. We were deep in the wood when I came around the corner to find the smallest bear cub I had even seen in the wild walking right down the middle of the trail. We quickly backed up in case mom was around. After about 15 minutes we realized this cub was alone and in need of help. I called the dnr which gave me a number to a lady who would be able to help out. I didn’t get an answer and cell service sucked bad. Th cub finally made it off the trail and laid down. I knew it needed help bad but didn’t have anything to take it with or knew if I would get a call back on a holiday weekend. We decided to let nature take its course and kept going. By the time we got to link had a voicemail and text from a different lady who old help. I was able to get a box from the bar and my dad and I immediately left to find the cub while the rest of the group stayed for lunch. A good 30 minute run we got back to the spot and I immediately jumped out and started my search. It had been about 2.t hours since we left the cub. I walked back to where it had laid down and she as gone so I started looking through the woods working my way back towards the wheeler. About 15 feet from where she had originally laid down there she was curled up sleeping again. She was in severe distress and needed help fast. We loaded her up and off we went and it was going to be a long ride back to the next town. We met some locals at a shelter that got out the map and showed us some fire roads we could run down which helped us get back faster. Once we made it to the town the people were already there waiting with a bottle of Karo syrup to get her some nutrients. The rest of the group loaded up and met us so they could see her one last time and know we had found her and got her to help. The lady is going to keep us updated on her progress and we even got to name her. The lady gave us some names if we didn’t have any and the one we chose was makoonce which is Ojibway for little bear. Here is a couple current pictures from yesterday and today. I’m not sure if she is out of the woods yet but she is eating and has received fluids and emergency vitamins to help her. I will get more pictures from yesterday as other with us took them while I was on the phone.
