Any pictures of the bark?
That's the problem, no bark. I've cut a lot of walnut in my day, none have ever had a purple ring.

I remember cutting it and showing dad, we both thought walnut, but wasn't 100% sure. It was hard as hell tho!

I remember cutting it and showing dad, we both thought walnut, but wasn't 100% sure. It was hard as hell tho!
Probably some kind of alder or something. Walnut always has white sap wood and it's not all that hard.

Clint, you prolly cut down the most endangered species of tree in Iowa, You better hope the tree huggin bunch don't find out or they'll be on you like a chicken on a junebug, lol.:D

There wasn't any bark, but there was some stringy fibers before the hardwood, which is the one of reasons I didn't think it was walnut. But we never thought black locust

I never seen locust that dark either ...who the hell knows. Just call it fire wood...
