The little firing coil up by the carburetor has one screw that grounds it out if it's dirty or has paint, is loose etc Happened to me and about drove me nuttier than I already am. Lol
I had that happen to me when I was deleting the governor. It was a bit nerve racking lol.

Good evening Brian, how was your day? How is your wife doing?
Evening Bud
Had a good day just putzing around the house.
Mama is doing okay, just can't do much of anything. As she has to keep her foot evaluated as much as possible.
Can't put any pressure on it for 2 weeks. Then she will get a cast on.

Found my problem. The connector on the firing coil had crack insulation and I think was grounding out on the carb. Taped it up to check and it's getting fire. Still flooded tho....

Sweet. Those 281/288 coils seem to really last good actually.

If you seen how much fuel went down the throat of the carb yesterday you'd understand lol. If it won't start tomorrow I'll pull the cylinder and clean it out lol
I pull the plug, tape the throttle open and set the saw upside-down. Seems to help clear out the bottom end.
