Pour some water on that. Instant sweat lodge.

I'm sweating enough wif out the water.

Is the metal kept warm to stop it cooling down or am I on the wrong path

Well the press is kept warm the entire time we are welding. being cast steel the heat cycling plus the pull from the weld could cause cracks/breaks. Same with cooling too fast.

Got my heater back lol. That basket puts off some btu yellow hot. Still plenty warm in that pic.

Those look like the billets we machine into shafts at work! I know about those hot baskets as well...great in the winter but not so much in the summer.

im glad im not the only one who understands the effects on the metal from the heat and cold cycles some of the guys at work dont understand why stuff cracks and breaks

Yep, it is rather interesting. This frame was cast in 1942, not a lot of spares left around. The fun part is annealing it, bring it up to 1050-1200* dull red hold depending on the amount of weld put in and slow cool.

My dad told me a story of a press just like this someone else had welded up.
He got called down to machine the bed, when he showed up it was still 200+*. Told him he couldn't do it that warm cause it wouldn't be right once it cooled. So they put a bunch of big fans on it to cool it down. Bout 4 hours later as he is setting up to mill. Hears a loud bang, thought someone was messing with him dropping a billet on the floor plates. Nope the damn press broke clean through 3of the 4 legs. they chopped it up and scrapped it. That was a rather costly mistake on there part.

4x10. Believe they were forging them into big diesel pistons.
