Are any of you guys on your local fire department?

My wife joined ours this spring. She is a nurse and only works three 12 hour shifts a week. Seeing that she is home 4 days a week she decided to join and run medical calls.

Now she is bugging me and asking if I am interested in joining. It has been something that has always interested me, but with young kids I didn't feel that it would be fair to join up with the amount of classes that the first year or so requires.

Are any of you guys on your local FD or have you been on one? I have a few questions

Never been a local volunteer. I have been on the emergency response team at work. I gave it up when I went to day shift.

Done a lot of live fire and rescue training but luckily never had to use it. If I had more time I'd consider it.

I am mostly curious what the Fire Academy involves.

Our department requires that everyone needs to be fire and EMT certified.

They made a exception for my wife with her experience, she will only run medical calls and assist patients and department personnel on fire calls. She will not need to go through fire academy.
I will be worried about taking the MFR and EMT class, but she will be there for me and help me with those. I am curious what the Fire Academy has to entail.
