My son has been hinting around lately, making Birthday/Christmas present noise for one of those, and trying the "keep me from sawing my fingers off" angle with Donna

Negative, and I plan to keep it that way. I have not heard it go off either. When it came in the shop seven years ago, at the safety dept. buy-off meeting they got a hot dog from the cafeteria and triggered it. I guess it just had one little nick on the weiner. There are some good high speed videos of the mechanism on youhootube. I've heard the owner of the company will demonstrate it using his finger.
