The bench is so you can reach over the top to medicate......cause sticking your arm through the boards is a sure way to get a broked arm.

I milked in a parlor when I was a kid. Always had to reach under (sometimes between) metal pipes that the stanchions were made of to put the milkers on. Hot my arms beat to shít more times than I could count. I don't miss them bastards.
