First pics are dye penetrant.
Last one is wet mag particle. That chit lights up like a lightning bolt.
They excavated down to the base of the joint this evening. There was rust under the weld. No fusion at the root at all.
Did I mention this is all holding the drums in a 150 ton hoist?
Also, the other 150 ton hoist for the other crane has the same issue.

Bad thing was, I didnt catch that.
One of their maintenance guys was replacing an encoder that was bolted to tje end of that shaft. He just happened to have done some NDT earlier that week, and noticed about a 3/4" long section of cracked paint at the toe of the weld.
He wire wheeled the rest of the paint off and thought he saw a crack. Dye penetrant confirmed it.
The rest of them had no outward indication of cracks at all.
Thats the scary part.
