So haven't been on here much last couple of weeks. Just hit and miss. Did I miss something that would lead you to more than normal slacking there southener other than the beautiful weather you and @Crzybowhntr have been enjoying??

Ed, Gotta ask what you think about the valvetrain/cam failures you have posted. I can't imagine GM is off on the metallurgy materials and processes. I see they have gone to forged or possibly vacuum pressed powdered metal rocker arms? I'm assuming it is due to the cam profiles you have shown. It looked as if the cam lobe ramps seemed very aggressive on opening and closing side. Are these parts failing because of that or is it mileage demands or lightweight 0W20 engine oils? And don't tell me you don't give a fukk. I highly doubt that would be your opinion.


The one I posted today is a 6.2 v8.
The last one was a 2.4 ohc 4 cylinder.

I've had a bunch of 6.2's swallow intake valves.
I don't recall the size, but they are big..
Common denominator on the 6.2's I've had was highway speed and a broken valve spring.
I think the weight, rpm, and the fact the spring breaks in multiple locations causes it to hang in the guide where it promptly is introduced to the piston..and the rest is carnage.

I personally believe it all stems from a valve spring issue.
The exhaust valves on the 6.2 are sodium filled. Just an interesting piece of info.

You have missed nothing Tim, dall is still a dick, kiwioilboiler has been on fire lately, mónkeyman has been sick, hoskvarna has a hip problem, Jason still has werms, Ed is still fixing chit, 41 fan teaching and *b-wording. I know I am missing many, but they all fall into one of the above categories. Just the usual banter.

We have had some HST failures in newer machines Larry that I've been involved with. And some new models with poor digging performances. Having to stay out of town the last three weeks. Got a couple more weeks to go. Not putting any less hours in like I thought LOL. Still digging it though!

When I was 18 I could set a 16 penny with a tap, one strike to send it, and a second to make sure it got home safe.
Nowadays, it seems the only tool I have is a damn rubber mallet...:crybaby2:
Sure, it'll get the job done, but it takes A LOT more strokes, I mean strikes.:nusenuse:
My suggestion is put some screws in that bish.
Takes longer, but shes gonna know you took the time to torque it in and not just pound it.

I know dodge started playing around with sodium filled valves back in the 1940's on truck engines, and back then, they spec'd truck engines for a heavier weight oil then car engines.

Not a bad thing.
They are supposed to dissipate heat better and run quite a bit cooler.
I recall something about a failure under certain circumstances though the Na (sodium) can actually explode or something along those lines.
It's been years since my reading on them.

Heat has to go somewhere, and from what I know heat rises. Transfers into the head and springs. A spring that takes on too much heat, is not a spring anymore. Maybe GM should think about putting in heavier valves springs into their engines with sodium valves. IDK?

Or GM just leaves them like they are, and you keep fixing them.

I've read a bunch in old manuals from the 1940's about sodium valves. (not that means anything these days)

I'm just talking about what I read, in my old manuals & parts books from the 1940's. Dodge truck engines back then, that had sodium valves, it was not just the valves that were different. The head, springs, keepers, etc were all different / heavier for a truck with sodium valves.

I'm just a dumb redneck that likes to read.
