It's just something you have to get used to. Give them the best life you can provide while you're raising them and rest easy knowing they lived better than anything you buy from the local market. And don't name them!!
I have zero problems with the animals becoming food thing. All my animals are treated well. It is the wife that applies a name to everything, including vehicles, tractors etc. So I will not bring any more animals to the farm as food, as they will never become food. So animals for food will have to be raised off farm. Otherwise they will just become another mouth to feed. We have enough of those. We raised and weaned a calf for the neighbors, who we buy a cow from whenever we are ready for more. We just have to make sure it isn't daisy! Lol

the ones ive done was named burger and steak
if you let it bother you to grow a animal that was meant to be food then you are too much of a city slicker lol
its just a return on the investment in the animal and feed for the animal
It is not me who is bothered, I am the one who puts down sick animals as needed. The roosters we had, I processed. So city slicker doesn't apply to me. My wife just has a soft heart. So we do things a bit different. Off site food only. Lol

Just swap your eating pets with the neighbour's eating pets. It's like swinging, but for food not seedy entertainment.
If only I could. Only Mexicans want goats. Hired a guy putting seamless gutters at the neighbors, neighbor told him I wanted gutters too. He asked the neighbor if I would trade a goat for the gutters. Neighbor warned him not to ask that question. Said my wife would shoot him. Lol. Paid cash for the gutters.

Would take quite an event, but you are right. Things that would cause times hard enough for us to eat them, would be real bad for everyone. Not wanting that.

people who has never had it rough are more likely to turn vegan than ones who have had hard times
but i wont starve just so a cow or other animal can eat and live

Me either. They are all very fortunate we don't yet need them to be food. Because food they would become.

Hey Randy, how hard is it to keep pigs? Do they tear stuff up as bad as I hear? Pork might be something I would like stocked up in my freezer.
as long as theyre happy theyre pretty easy. if they get hungry/thirsty they WILL get out and fukk stuff up.
buddy had this boar that was like a dog, could literally call to him, he’d come over and flop down and wait for belly scratches.

Rings in their noses first thing. Then they ain't a problem. We have a pen under roof, with a concrete floor. That helps.
we’d load hogs in a trailer, never had rings in noses. grab those m-fers by the ears if they werent gettin the picture, theyll do anything you want lol.

Pigs are pretty smart too aren’t they?
absolutely. not sentimental tho. did plenty of farm kills/gut jobs. as we would be draggin the volunteer out of the pen, the other ones would be following along eatin the blood from the new breathing hole right out of the dirt. friggin ruthless.
