I have a hard time recommending homeowner stuff, I always prefer to buy once cry once. How handy are you? Maybe a walk behind with a sulky? Farmall Cub with belly mower? Gravely garden tractors? The G series aren't that old, only 20 years or so. If you must buy new, get better than a 2200 hydro, 3100 and with a Kawasaki engine will last a long time. The stuff you see at big box stores is going to need replacing in less than 10 years.

Tough question. What is your budget? That will help.

Im not as handy as I would like to think I am. Budget is what it take to get what I want but not unlimited. I too have graduated from home owner stuff. Maybe a larger format walk behind isn’t a bad idea. Toro has some really nice walk behind/ stand one that you can put a blade one but I don’t think I can justify the $15k price I have seen on those.

I’ve learned from reading here that Kawasaki is preferred over Kohler motors.

The newer Kohler's, I'd agree. The old Kohler command was an excellent engine.

In that case, something high in quality that will have enough power to remove snow. The grass cutting part is easy....the other is what I would focus on.

I hear you, I have this feeling in my head that if I am happy with the snow it will be overkill for the grass. Might need a different machine, possibly a quad with a blade for snow combined with my existing blower.

Here are a couple in the. Winnipeg area.
They come with blowers and mowers, one comes with a tiller too. I like the onan engines.

I see guys struggle with quads all the time here.
My neighbor has a JD lawn tractor, not sure the model and a blower. He sold the blade off his quad. I don't think they are large enough or heavy enough to actually move snow.

But Larry.....That's an antique !!!!
That's how you know it will last Randy. All the companies that made stuff to last, went out of business once they made one for everyone that wanted one. A lesson most companies today understand. Benjamin Franklin Gravely agrees. Between safety litigation, and planned obsolescence, this will never return. Enjoy our disposable crap from now on. I am picking up a Farmall Cub next weekend, not because I need one. But because I want to have one to pass on to the kids. Might get an H and an M too.

I know you understand.

Thanks Larry, those are intriguing especially the first one. The verbiage of the second likely makes me a non-buyer. The Tire-kicker / ice-cream licker comment is a red flag to me.

I just wish the supply chain wasn’t so ducked up. There is next to no used commercial equipment available as they haven’t been able to get their new replacements yet and have been repairing and keeping the old stuff going.
I’ll drop by my Stihl dealer this week and have a chat, hasn’t steered me wrong on anything yet.

There are some vehicles with great engines with a crappy vehicle wrapped around it. No matter what car or truck, there are examples of lasting a long time and there are people who have had nothing but trouble. Discounting neglect, what would be the longest lasting vehicle? While diesels are known for their longevity, they are also known for expensive maintenance costs.

I gree the high strung turbo motors make good power, they have their issues. Anything that goes through those heat cycles takes a beating, and eventually have oiling problems. I believe a NA motor is going to last the longest. Unless it revs really high, (S2000) , which brings me back to tractors. Those low revving long stroke motors last for almost ever. Which is why I think the most reliable engine will be Ford's 4.9L inline 6. I know Dodge had an inline 6, was it the 225 slant? Not sure what that was put in besides cars and maybe jeeps.

Sorry for the long posts, bored and on call!

Want someone to call you Larry [emoji2957]

I liked the first one too. I am a little shocked at the price difference up in the great white north. Seems like your prices are 40-50% higher than down here in the states. Those would be 2k-2.5k down here. That 446 is a good machine, and simple to work on.

Pics and Price? Have to calculate how many $1000’s for gas too…

Maybe @Dub11 could get it as close as Fargo.

I do take that into consideration. I used to do track events at Mt. Tremblant and Kalaboogie MSP. Yet your prices are much higher than the exchange rate for some reason. I guess it is what you're used to.

Only you know what you are comfortable buying. I like old tractors, so would be all over that case. Those have a great reputation for durability. As does that onan B43, which I think it has. Not a P series which would lose a valve seat if overheated. Those tractors are all hydro, even has a hydro pto. Plus having the attachments you need with it. It will outlast any big box store anything.

Good luck Gary.
