Funny thing is just last week the service managers kid replaced an engine for cracked pistons, yet I have to take them apart and replace the pistons..

Being an engineer myself, I can say that there are a lot of engineers that have never turned a wrench in their life. Often times things would only require a minor tweak in the design to make maintenance so much easier. Seeing some of the stuff you post makes me want nothing to do with a newer vehicle. Some of the better machines I have had the opportunity to work on were farm equipment manufactured by John Deere and Case IH.

Heavy wear to piston because compression leaked straight down to oil control ring level and side loaded the piston Ed?

Low tension rings, lack of maintenance, they all look like that.

When the rings all line up like that, doesn't that indicate an out-of-round bore?

I've heard that before, but have seen it on round cylinders too.
I wouldn't be surprised if they were installed new like that.

Maybe you just need a helper named VaJohnJohn?? Hahahaha

Yes.
Come on over!

My guess was poor production tolerances like the older 5.3 Vortec engines with cold piston slap. All the rings being installed the same way also suggests an assembler who may not have been sober. I can see how the piston load would be uneven with the rings all put on the same way and then wearing on one side.
