Junk! A vane pump for oil? Wow they have way cheaped out!

They vary the oil pressure based off load.
Been doing it for quite some time now.

Vane pumps have been supplying fluid pressure to automatic transmissions for a little while now with minimal issues.

There's simply something "not right" with these when exposed to cold, as Steve was alluding to.

Pump apart.
Fractured the ring top and bottom, only ate 4 vanes. Usually they are all gone.

Yeah.....that pivot point seems to be the weak point. Looks like a pump out of a 4L60E.

My money would be on a spike in localised oil pressure. Low temp leading to temporarily excessively high viscosity oil and resultant increase in pumping load. Looks like once its in a pump cavity any excess volume has nowhere to go but bust a vane?
Any correlation between oil spec, oil and pump age and the failed units Ed? Or not the sort of thing that is tracked?

Edit: changed my diagnosis...

maybe the the outer wear ring busts due to excess pressure or dis-similar metals expansion rate, then the vanes catch and break off.

These engines use synthetic 0w20.

You are correct in the ring breaks, then catches the vanes.
Why we see some every winter only is beyond my pay grade.
GM tracks failures on warranty claims, but once out of warranty they have no clue.

The vane pump in my P5AT diesel has a Ten Minute drain and refill limit or they lose prime, LS's don't suffer from that additional issue do they?

That was your plane on the trip home right?
I'm far from a frequent flier so I'd be lying if I said that video didn't pucker my ass a little when it dropped a few days before the trip.

They changed my flight schedule around a little on the way back. It included a touch and go in Tucson. 80% of the plane filed off and when the new passengers boarded things got hot. I noticed the lady across the aisle from me had a little something special going on when she got on. Lots of loose items and the crew asked her twice to clear the aisle for boarding passengers as she got everything stowed above and below. I wasn't looking at his face but shortly after a guy got on with his mask riding a little low. Instead of notifying the stewardess the gal took it upon herself to let the guy know his nose wasn't covered. Now I didn't see this part, but from the account after he lowered it instead and coughed in her direction. Needless to say he missed his flight and we had a delay taking off.

These are the type of self-important folks that you see whilst flying...

Being on a plane wouldn't bother me, it's the idiots rushing to board or get in your space in the terminal that get me riled up. That said I too have no plans to fly anytime soon, mostly as even domestic travel outside our province has a 2 week self isolation upon return.
