On the early 40 series, instead of a parking brake, they had a park position. It’s where first would be on a 4 speed automotive type transmission.

I scooped up the whole bench from another area just for the vice. Sweet tool, but close it up when you're done. Yah, I close my adjustable wrenches and clamps to store them too. Maybe it's me that's weird.

Yep. Same has happened with the 2040.
I know it hurts, but get them the replace the countershaft and main shaft bearings with SKF or another decent brand of bearing while its split.
Bearings coming apart and tearing up gears was the main problem with my cousins 2040. He had all the bearings replaced while it was apart the SECOND time. Hasnt had any more issues with THAT.
