Anchorage has had that problem for several years now because of *s-word wages and almost zero benefits

They need to go back to a tier with pension and TSP and stuffs

most the guys here can haul gravel or coal and make more than working for state road
it takes the lazy drivers to be state road

There are still guys out there with Tier 2 retirement and benefits and we are on Tier 4 now

Tier 4 has zero pension, zero thrift savings unless you set up your own IRA or something, although they do get medical

My tier had pension, Supplemental Benefits System where the state matched my maxed out contribution to a ROTH type retirement plan, and medical

Many people would take lower wages for a guaranteed pension and savings etc but the wages now are garbage as well

And they can't figure out why hiring is so hard and turnover is so awful

I would get 120 applications for an entry level job when it was still Tier 3 and after Tier 4 came about I was lucky to get 20 applications and sometimes those were so bad I had to re-advertise the position

I was having to hire the best of a bad lot just to get people into the chair
