I cut my firewood 14" - 16". Makes it split easier.

I cut 16" also, but my hydraulic splitter complains a lot less than I do.

18°F and snow this morning, so I spent today making a couple really long soft shackles out of 7/16" amsteel to use when the weather gets nicer. Laid out they're about 48" long and should be good to about 50k lbs.

Nice work. Does it need a special splice technique under the whipping?

No I don't get too fancy. The black thread is just a common whipping knot. It's not strictly necessary but I like to put it there. The nylon sheath makes a huge difference for durability though. It wouldn't last nearly as long without it.

I like the custom wood wedge.
I usually have a few I made out of dogwood. Was just planning on cutting our trail into these dead trees....so I didn't bring any. Got the trail cut quicker than I thought, so the dead trees had to go.
