Thanks Tim, yep I spent a whole day cleaning and oranising parts yesterday. Every thread is being chased and and every bolt thread cleaned too. Here's a video of the startup procedure. 600cc twin cylinder horizontally opposed 10hp 'pony' engine to start the diesel. Shares the cooling system and the exhaust is jacketed through the intake of the diesel to pre heat the intake air.

Satisfying to know you can make something that small wake up so much power.
Takes a lot longer, but somehow makes you feel better than just pushing a start button.

Branch supervisor rang me yesterday arvo to see if I could go help sort some fulla out who was "having trailer issues".

Oh joy.....

First issue was he was towing a 1650kg/3300lbs boat with a 1500/3000 at best Holden Captiva. You might get them as a GM something. GM Lemon be best moniker...we call them Craptiva.

Major drama was the bow vee block or snubber was mounted on paper thin steel that had already been weld repaired once. It simply folded out of the way, all the way. No Bueno. Not a part anyone local carried.

Made what I could out of a scrounge around. Chained the boat to the trailer via the bow roller using a 4x4 tyre as a softish stop, then pulled it forward with a load binder at the rear. Then bolted the vee block to the wrong side of the wrong mount wing to provide another layer of protection for the hull from the winch body. I wasn't happy about it, but the dude was 3 hours from his family and destination and took full responsibility. He was in way over his head if you ask me.

The mighty 2.4 engine.

Just priced out one for a 13 Equinox that came in knocking, leaking radiator, no compression in #2.
$6300 just for the engine. No labor, seals, gaskets, etc.
All to repair a shìtbox worth $5000 if it was in running condition.

Sounds like weve come back to the 1980s, but with computer nerds making cheap *s-wordboxes instead of slide rule nerds...
Viscious cycle of aggravation.
Maybe we are on the verge of the second round of 1990s vehicle design?

Had a guy down the road from our deer hunt camp house that rescued an old Lincoln diesel engine from a grist mill down in Savannah.
He used his F12 Farmall to run the water pump and a small oiler pump, and started it from the belt pulley on his Farmall regular.(maybe I got that backwards).
Anyway, that was a good time to go help start it and listen/feel that thimg run.
They heated a rod with the blow torch as a true "glow plug".
It blew awesome smoke rings out the stack when it was warm and settled in.

Same fella, Mr Louis Hall, had a sweet-arse John Deere model R diesel tractor.
That thing was a BEAST for this area.
We didnt have the "prairie giants" or the "wheatland" tractors.
He used to pull with it at the fairgrounds in Washington GA.
Usually walked off easy with the sled.
That thing sounded MEAN when it went down the track.
Made all the IH 10 series and Allis 100 series work for their money.
Would out pull a 4020 JD easy.
He had a 1938? JD model A on steel that looked and sounded like heaven, and I dont even like 2 cell Jonny poppers.

I more felt sorry for the dude than the boat. Wasn't his fault the trailer was a poor design.
The whole boat package is what i call a cost efficient design actually. Sometimes (all the time...) I go overboard and end up with over designed items for my needs.
This trailer issue reminded me why that isn't always such a bad idea.
Buy quality, complain once.
