I've called it a mf'er and a corksucker too.
I don't think I ever refer to any of my hoists as lifts actually.

I dont call any of the hoists I work on lifts either, unless its a winch.
They are all worthless, corksoaking, mfing junk.

Kinda.
"Lifts" or elevators as Mr Otis named them, have been driven by various means over the years. Most in larger buildings actually use a winch system with variable speed drive and a counterweight nowadays.
Theres other maffs and sciences involved too, or so ive heard.
Basic "lifts" are called VRCs here.
Most are hydraulically driven, and only serice a small number of levels.

Its ALL an engineers fault.
Somebody put the steering wheel on the WRONG side of the car, and instead of fixing it, they just went with it and made the roads backwards to compensate.
